Brookfield eighth grade students in Melanie Horn’s class are getting a great opportunity to learn about health science and medical professions through the Cleveland Clinic’s Adventures in Health Science and Medicine program. It’s a series of connected learning experiences that include hour-long sessions through video conferences with healthcare professionals. Students participate in an ongoing case study, hands-on activities and collaborative discussions. Several professions that students learn about are Medical Laboratory, Radiology, Respiratory Care, Pharmacy and Physical Therapy. Each class that participates is provided with an AHSM kit, which has all the necessary equipment and resources to complete the hands-on activities in each session. Afterwards, each class gets an opportunity to show their hands-on activity to healthcare professionals and other participating classes through the web camera. Danica Bliss is an 8th grade student participating in the class. She says she enjoys the hands-on experiments because they help her learn better. Danica plans to go into the medical field and this opportunity is giving her a better vision on which career path she would like to choose. At the end of the classroom courses, students will work together with Mrs. Horn to invent a medical innovation tied to their findings in the program’s case study investigation. Brookfield Middle School participated in this program last year and it made a great impact. Mrs. Horn is excited she was able to apply and bring it back to Brookfield Middle School students this school year.
