Congratulations to these 13 BHS students who have received official Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Officiating Licenses in both basketball and volleyball!
These industry recognized credentials are possible thanks to a new course offered at the high school this year. RefReps Officiating gives students an opportunity, through online curriculum, to become licensed referees. Students spend one semester developing an understanding of the rules and regulations for different sports and how to apply and interpret them in game situations. They also have an opportunity to apply their knowledge in scrimmages and simulated game scenarios. A complete course description is listed below.
We're proud to say all 13 students in the class passed both certification exams. All of them admit it's "pretty cool" to be a licensed referee and a few even plan to put their certification to use on the courts! Each will also receive a half credit towards graduation requirements.
Next semester students in the class will work to earn certifications in football and baseball. We hope to eventually add soccer and softball into the mix as well!
Great work, Warriors!
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The high school officiating curriculum is designed to prepare students for the role of sports officials, equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to effectively officiate various athletic competitions. The primary goals of the course are to develop a deep understanding of the rules and regulations of different sports, enhance decision-making abilities, and cultivate leadership qualities essential for fair and impartial officiating. Throughout the curriculum, students will study the rules and mechanics specific to different sports, including soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and/or softball. They will learn how to interpret and apply rules in dynamic game situations, manage conflicts and maintain control on the field or court, and effectively communicate with players, coaches, and fellow officials. Additionally, students will engage in practical experiences, such as officiating scrimmages and simulated game scenarios, to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts and refine their officiating skills. By the end of the course, students will be well-prepared to officiate sporting events with professionalism, integrity, and confidence. This certificate counts towards Industry Recognized Credentials (4 points) and is worth a half a credit towards graduation.
