Brookfield 8th graders are putting leadership lessons into action through the Leadership Excellence course taught by Mrs. Horn.

The course focuses on five core leadership traits: interpersonal skills, character, competence, vision, and boldness. Students develop skills in communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and teamwork while learning how to become effective leaders in school, the workplace, and their community.

Students also have the opportunity to earn an industry-recognized credential approved by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. The credential is worth three points toward the Industry-Recognized Credential Seal and can help students work toward the OhioMeansJobs-Readiness Seal.

A major part of Mrs. Horn’s course is taking those lessons beyond the classroom. Each nine-week group will partner with a local nonprofit, with students developing campaigns, creating products, and organizing fundraising activities to support the organization.

The first group is partnering with Yellow Brick Place, which provides free, non-medical support and resources to individuals and families impacted by cancer.

Earlier this week, Yellow Brick Place representatives Betty Coss and Kathleen Moliterno visited Mrs. Horn’s class to share more about the organization’s mission, programs, and services. Students are now working together to develop ways to raise funds, including creating merchandise in Brookfield’s Makerspace Lab and other fundraising opportunities.

Through the experience, students are not only learning what it means to be a leader—they are getting the opportunity to lead by serving others and making a difference in their community.
