Closing Information

The safety of our students, staff, and families is a top priority in the district. When severe weather conditions such as snow, ice, or extreme temperatures pose a risk to travel or campus operations, we may decide to close or delay the start of the school day.

Here is some information for families on how we will alert you to changes and what factors affect our decision.

How We Communicate Closings

When the District will be closed or operating on a two-hour delay, we will communicate this decision in the following ways:

  1. Call/Text Alert System: Our call/text alert system will send a notification of the change directly to your device.
  2. Social Media & Website: We will post closure information on the Brookfield Local School District Facebook page (Brookfield Local School District) and our district website.
  3. Local News: Information about our adjustment will be shared with local television news stations WFMJ, WKBN, and WYTV. The stations will broadcast the information on their station and on their websites.
  4. Timing of Announcements: Our goal is to make announcements by 5:45 a.m. for morning cancellations, giving you time to adjust your day accordingly.

What Factors Are Considered When Closing

The following factors are considered when making school adjustments:
  1. Weather forecast: The National Weather Service defines predictors for winter weather and guidance will be followed accordingly.
  2. Road Conditions & Impact on Transportation: The safety of our buses, staff, and our high school drivers are top priorities. Road conditions will impact our ability to have school. Input from local law enforcement, transportation agencies, and our transportation and maintenance/grounds departments is all considered when determining whether to close or delay the start of the school day. 
  3. Temperature & Wind Chill: In cases of extreme cold, we will consider cancellations based on the wind chill and factors impacting the temperature.

Two-Hour Delay Information

In the event of a two-hour delay, please keep the following information in mind:
  • Buildings open exactly two hours later than normally scheduled. 
    • BHS doors open at 9:45 a.m.; classes begin at 10:00 a.m.
    • BMS doors open at 9:45 a.m.; classes begin at 10:00 a.m.
    • BES doors open at 10:30 a.m.; classes begin at 10:55 a.m. 
  • All classes run on a shortened schedule 
  • Dismissal time stays the same
    • BHS dismisses at 2:36 p.m.
    • BMS dismisses at 2:36 p.m.
    • BES dismisses at 3:10 p.m.
  • Lunch will be served as usual; no breakfast
  • Bus routes/pick-up locations remain the same but the pick-up time is two hours later. Drop-off times are the same.

Unexpected Early Dismissal

If it becomes necessary to dismiss students early due to unexpected circumstances, such as severe weather, power outages, heating issues, or plumbing problems, we will promptly share release information through the communication channels listed above.

Additional Information for ESC and TCTC Students

ESC Students
Students attending classes in other districts will still be transported if the district educating that child has school and we do not.

TCTC Students
If the district cancels school for the day, TCTC students will not be transported. 
In the event of a two-hour delay, TCTC students will be transported two hours late. Pick-up remains the same.
