Hoops For Hope

Hoops For Hope is a Cancer Society Fundraiser to help raise money for cancer. At first, I brought a paper home that said Hoops For Hope free throw contest. My mom said she didn’t think I could shoot a free throw. I said give me a chance, and she did. I ended up winning at my own school for 5th and 6th grade. I shot 8 for 10. I know I could’ve done better, but I tried my best. For contest #2, I shot at South Range HS. This one was easy. I had to go against two 6th graders, one girl one boy. The girl was up first. I kind of felt bad because she went 0 for 10. The next kid up shot 4 for 10. Then it was my turn. I ended up shooting 9 for 10. I missed one shot, but I was happy that I was going to the Cleveland Cavalier’s game. The final contest was at Quicken Loans Arena. There were about four 5th graders and about eight 6th graders. I won that contest too! But, it took a tiebreaker to win. I pulled off a win by shooing four out of five foul shots.

8th Grade Golf Champion

Congratulations to Brookfield's Middle School eighth grader, Conner Stevens and all his achievements with Golf!

From Conner Stevens:

“This summer was a busy golf season for me. I set goals at the beginning of the summer and worked hard to reach them. I am a member of the First Tee of the Mahoning Valley and this summer I assisted with the younger golfers. I started golfing when I was 3 years old. Several people think golf is not a hard sport. Most of them have never played a competitive round of golf. Unlike most sports if you are having a bad round you are not going to get benched. You have to keep playing until the end. Your attitude and mind can help you or hurt you. That was one of my goals this summer. Keeping my attitude positive. Another goal I set for myself was to score under par. I was able to accomplish this during the summer. I played in the NOPGA 13-15 year old division. I was the youngest player in the age group. I took first place at the Rawiga Tournament and finished in the top ten, 8 out of 10 NOPGA tournaments I played in. I played in the Northcoast Junior Golf Tournament at Little Mountain and came in first place. In addition, I won first place at the Deer Creek Optimist Qualifier. I also played in the Vindy Greatest Junior Golfer. I finished second place, finishing one stroke behind in the Championship round. I also attended U.S. Teen World Championships in Pinehurst, North Carolina. It was the third time I have played in Worlds. It is a 3 day tournament. My goal this year was to finish in the top 50. I placed 53 in the world for my age division. I got to play with players from Australia and Mexico. I also won the Herald Tamie Junior Tournament. It is a two day tournament. I was 5 strokes behind at the start of the second day. I battled back against a senior at Kennedy Catholic. We ended up having a sudden dealth playoff. I birdied the playoff hold and won. It was so exciting. I will continue to work on my golf game this winter and will start playing tournaments in early spring. I also am looking forward to High School golf next year and playing with Cheesy, Brian, Bryce and Justin.”

Congratulations Conner!
