Quiz Bowl

Prep Bowl has made some recent changes in the past few months and has formed into a new competition called "Quiz Bowl." At the middle school level, Quiz Bowl is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for which players attend periodic practices and then represent their school at tournaments. Those tournaments may be based on the school’s athletic conference, school district, county, or state; they may also be open to all comers.

The Quiz Bowl team had an educational historical tour at Stambaugh Auditorium in downtown Youngstown.  The entire team of 35 members in grades 5th-8th got to see the Concert Hall, Organ Chamber, Grand Ballroom, and Christman Hall.

In preparation for upcoming Quiz Bowl tournaments, the 7th and 8th team members were given the opportunity to observe a tournament in East Palestine, Ohio. A great experience overall!

Roman Numerals

  • Roman Numerals were invented by the ancient Romans. They were widely used in Europe before A.D. 1500 and are still used occasionally. The "Arabic numerals that we use today have place value; this means that both 5s in the number 1,505 do not have the same value. Roman numerals use rules rather than place value and use only seven basic symbols. I, V, X, L, C, D, and M. No symbol for 0.
  • Sometimes you have to add 2 or 3 of the same number to the bigger number on the left like VIII = 8.
  • You can only add 3 of the same numbers (not 4 or more!)
  • You can only subtract 1 number so you can't do IIV or IIIV
